  • Description

    Paiere. Fishing canoe. A type of vaka akaraanga (model canoe) in the style of a fishing canoe used in Nga Pu Toru (collective name for the islands of Atiu, Mauke and Mitiaro). Single hull outrigger canoe carved from wood. Kiato (wooden strats) lashed at two places. Ama (outrigger) attached. Manu (brace) secured at middle of the hull. Prow and stern covers at respective ends of the hull. Fibre lashing holding components secure.

    Wood used to carve the paiere is unsealed, of natural colour.
