    Fan (English)

  • Description

Ili. New type of fan. Ili are made in different shapes and sizes. The materials used to make them, as well as any embellishments, vary from natural to synthetic and/or a combination of the two. Ili can be used domestically as well as personally and as an accessory. This ili is made from tuāniu (coconut midrib) and fenū (young coconut epidermis). The fenū is added along with the midrib and half of its length is left hanging while the other half is woven in on one side.

The blade is then flipped over and the hanging section of the fenū is threaded up on that side. The border is decorated with a strip of red dyed lau kie (kie fibre). The kau (handle) is long and cylindrical in shape with woven strips of lauhulu (darker pandanus leaf) woven around the outer.
