    Skirt (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Pareu. Dance skirt of a Rakei ura (full dance costume). Bundles of Kiriau strands (hibiscus fibre) are wrapped and knotted around a thick 3-ply plait woven from strands of kiriau. Further defining the waistband (approximately 40mm from the top of the waistband) strands of kiriau interweave around several bundles of kiriau. The strands of kiriau are finished with a knot. This is continued across the width of the waistband.

The strands are finished at both ends of the waistband with a 3-ply plait. Two metal hooks are hand-sewn, using cotton thread, onto the back end of the waistband.
