  • Description

    Hoe. Paddle. This is a composite wooden paddle that comprises of seven parts. A ku'au (handle) extends to the end of the blade. Two parts make up the blade and four joins (two on each side) have been wedged and tapered into the blade and spine of the handle. This is a hydrodynamic technique. The wood is a mid brown colour and shows water wear from use. This hoe was from the Hōkūle'a voyage to Tahiti in 1976.

    Gifted to NZer Dr Church who operated on the navigator Rodo Williams. Dr Church donated the hoe to Auckland Museum in 1988.
