Wheel barra

human history
  • Other Name

    Wheel barrow (English)

  • Description

Wheel barra. Wheel barrow. This is a model wheel barra made from a dark wood material possibly sourced on Pitcairn Island. It features two handles, a square like receptacle and a single small wheel that has been lined with a malleable metal. The small leg parts that have been carved as part of the handles and side also have been lined with metal. It has finish with a polish. This was made by Elwyn Christian.

Wheel barra are considered a vital part of life in Pitcairn island as they were initially (and still are) used as a mode of transporting goods from one place to another on the island. The terrain of the island and limiting resources restrict the use of vehicles on the island.
