Manafau are skirts worn to perform in by both men and women and children, they are made from fau (hibiscus) fibre and there are different variations of manafau depending on the maker, the wearer, and the village they hail from. The most basic manafau are made from natural coloured fau but there are others with embellishments such as dyed fau, decorated waistbands etc. This manafau is made from natural coloured fau, the strips are all looped and knotted on to a longer strip of fau which makes up the upper waistband. Directly underneath this is a thick waistband of brown and white pueki shells they are knotted using the sia technique and are placed in an arrow shape along the waistband. The fau strips are left loose.WāhiTonga/PacificAccession Number1986.105Rā TāpiringaMay 1986Tohu Tuakiri Kē52051 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete waist garment, 1986.105, 52051, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1986.105, 52051Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua not known (Maker)WāhiTonga/PacificRāPre 1986Tikanga Waihangaplaited sewn shell work knotted threadcontinuous threadlaceneedleworkWānot knownWaitohu/māka52051; NiuatoputapuPāohohibiscus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreshell[hibiscus (fibre)]/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre/AAT MaterialsRaraunga Ine510 x 1070mm498mm890mm10mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Performing Arts/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūAccessory, DanceDance ArtefactsCeremonial ArtefactsCommunication ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua10 Dec 2020 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
