Swiss Lake villages: Well-preserved prehistoric villages along the shores of Swiss lakes first became known in 1854 during low water levels in a long drought. Several hundred are now known. The waterlogged conditions which ensured the survival of dwellings have also preserved woven textiles, pottery and even foodstuffs. The oldest sites date from circa 5000BC in the Neolithic Period. From circa 2000BC impressive bronze working appears.
