    Fishing basket (English)

  • Description

    Noke. Fishing basket. Woven from drauniniu (coconut leaf) and semi-circular in shape. Commencement from rim, worked downwards and tied off with a braid, visible at base of noke. Woven out in a loose check weave. Outer surface of rim is lined with a dyed-black strip of possibly voivoi (pandanus). There is a tie wrapped and knotted around rim, possibly made of strips of natural coloured voivoi, tali tolu (3-ply braid), with one end finished with a knot.

    Opening is fastened closed with strips of vau (hibiscus fibre).
