  • Kupu whakaahua

Moto Coga. Barbed spear. Carved from kau (wood) with the tolo ni moto (body of the spear) round in cross-section. The Moto Coga has been sawn in half. There are six coga (barbs) made of kau, individually carved and lashed to the upper area of the Moto Coga, forming the ulu ni moto (spearhead). The coga are lashed using threads of plant fibre, possibly cotton thread, that are coated with a dark-brown/black resin or substance, further securing the coga.

Lawa ni moto (woven decoration) consisting of strands of voi voi (pandanus) and vau (wild hibiscus) are woven around the base end. There are strands of plant fibre, possibly cotton thread, that are wrapped around the top and bottom ends of the lawa ni moto.
