Anave

human history
  • Other Name

    Dance club (English)

  • Description

Anave. Dance club. This is a carved anave made of a light wood. The handle of this anave is cylindrical in shape and is undecorated. The handle then flares to a wide, flat blade with a diamond cross-section. Both sides of the entire blade are covered with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These motifs are comprised of triangles carved in to the surface and filled with a white powder for decorative purposes.

The blade edge has four sides with a pointed tip and shares a likeness with modern swords. Anave are thought to have been introduced and used for entertainment purposes as opposed to being used as an 'au'upega (weapon of war).
