Te ili

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Ili. Fan. This is an ili made of kaumoe (immature coconut leaf). The stem of the kaumoe has been braided to form the spine of the ili as well as the handle. The handle is then encased in lalaga (woven) laukie (soft pandanus). The handle then flares to form a spade shaped blade. The kaumoe is lalaga to incorporate a row of windows near the edge for decorative purposes. The ili is then bordered with green and orange vulu (wool) that are tied in loops around the ili.

As in many parts of the Pacific, ili are used to keep cool in hot weather or presented as gifts to visitors.
