    Waist garment (English)

  • Description

    Titi. Waistband made of rauara (pandanus). Overlaid dyed red and dyed black strips of apuraka form triangular surface patterns known as Matautua across the centre width of the waistband. There are various shades of red. This indicate various batches of red dye used. Twelve tassels made of kiriau (hibiscus fibre) are sewn, using cotton thread, onto the lower edge of the waistband.
