Broom (English)

Purumu. Broom. Used for ceremonial purposes for welcoming visitors (long brooms). Made of strips of kikau midrib (coconut midrib). The top of the purumu consists of woven coconut fibres derived from the ends of the coconut midrib strips. The strands of coconut fibres are woven out in iri taki toru (3-ply braid). The top of the purumu is further defined with a black rubber strip tied around the bundle of midrib strips near the woven coconut coconut fibres.
