human history
  • Description

Manafau. Dance skirt. Manafau hana (Job's tears) & pueki. Manafau made from hana (Job's tears) seed and pueki shells. Manafau are worn by men and women around the waist during performances. This manafau is made from fau (hibiscus) strips, the commencement begins with strips of fau being loops and knotted on a long piece of fau which makes us the top of the waistband.

Directly underneath there is a thick decorated waistband of hana (Job's tears) seeds and pueki shells, they are sewn in such a way that it makes decorative patterns across its length. The fau strips are left to hang freely and are evenly spread across so that one is covered when wearing it.
