  • Description

    Toki tarai. Hafted adze. A highly polished toki (adze - quadrangular in cross section, convex) of toka kerekere (black basalt stone) hafted to a long, carved wooden haft. The middle of the haft is carved in a series of geometric shapes and decorative lines, grooves, and notches. Lashing of puru akari (braided coconut sennit) of a flat iri taki toru (3-ply braid) lashed on to the top of the haft to secure the adze.

    The lashing is natural in colour and the toki (adze) is dark in colour.
