Iliili

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Iliili. Fan. This is a hand held iliili. It features a round blade with a straight horizontal edge along its base and a length of kieto (ebony wood) that has been partly encased by the blade and extended for the purpose of a handle. The blade is made up of an internal structure of kāniu (coconut midribs) that have been wrapped and continuously knotted with pale yellow lau fā (pandanus leaf).

A serrated pattern has been woven into the structure of the blade and is defined by a dark brown dyed fibre of the same material used to weave the mass of the blade. The length of the handle is dark brown in colour and shows hafted marks along its surface. A braid of dark brown lau ulu (human hair) has been woven through a set of lau fā wefts and portrays a chevron-like pattern where the blade and handle intersect. Some fibrous ends have been left loose.
