'In eastern Polynesia, where the fibres of tapa are carefully felted into a single layer, prominent texturing of undecorated cloth is a feature. This appears to be achieved by a combination of laying the fibres out in particular arrangements along with a textured surface decoration impressed from the pattern carved on the beater.' Neich and Pendergrast, 'Pacific Tapa', 1997.
This example was made for Dr F.B. Rice in 1926, when he was in Mangaia.
