Mat

human history
  • Other Name

    Mat (English)

  • Description

Mat. This is a mat made from banana leaf fibres that have been treated, flattened then stitched together. The natural fiber appears to be that of a large dried leaf form that has been laid vertically to form a cover and then made into two layers. A thick stitch runs across the top and bottom of the rectangular shaped rain shelter. The fibre material is a pale yellow in colour, with some fibrous areas and dark spots dappled throughout.

It has been folded in half horizontally for storage. Then rolled into a bundle. Fold marks have contributed to the splitting in some areas down the mat.
