beater

human history
  • Other Name

    ike (Tongan)

  • Description

Ike. Bark cloth beater. Ike are used in the process of making ngatu (bark cloth). Strips of the inner paper mulberry are soaked overnight and then beaten with an ike on a board to flatten and stretch the strips into bigger and thinner sections. These are then pasted with other sections to make up a completed ngatu. This ike is carved from one block of wood, light brown in colour. The handle is cylindrical in shape, tapering out towards the base.

The beater itself is long and square in shape with four sides which are all used in the beating process. There is one flat side and the remaining three sides all have four lengthwise grooves. There is a length of plaited pulu'i niu which is wrapped around the handle. The grooves and ike itself are very clean cut, so much so that they could have been made by a machine. Its possible that this ike was made for display purposes or the tourist market, due to the fact that the dimensions and shape are almost perfect, it shows no signs of use, and the wood isn't toa or a wood that can withstand the labour intensive beating process.
