  • Description

    Rubu. Bag. Woven from voivoi (pandanus), double-layered, rectangular in shape, consisting of four sides (four sides are patterned), handles and base. Commencement from base for both inner and outer layers. Inner layer consists of strips of voivoi woven out in check.

    Base of outer layer is woven from wide strips of voivoi altering to a finer check weave incorporating strips of somo (dyed-black voivoi) forming checkered and diamond patterns across sides, front and back faces of rubu. Firm rim around opening of rubu consisting of strips of voivoi wrapped around a base possibly made of wood. Two braids, consisting of natural coloured strips of voivoi and somo, form the handles that are sewn into the upper front and back sides of the rubu.
