Manafau are skirts worn to perform in by both men and women and children, they are made from fau (hibiscus) fibre and there are different variations of manafau depending on the maker, the wearer, and the village they hail from. The most basic manafau are made from natural coloured fau but there are others with embellishments such as dyed fau, decorated waistbands etc. This manafau is made from majority purpled dyed fau as well as some natural coloured fau. The hanging strips of fau are looped and knotted on a waistband which is a plaited bunch of fau fibres. The strips are left to hang loose, there are remnants of pule and pueki shells as well as hana (Job's tears) seed on the waistband which indicates a possibility of a decorated waistband.WāhiTonga/PacificAccession Number1982.194Rā Tāpiringa31 May 1982Tohu Tuakiri Kē50160.1 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete waist garment, 1982.194, 50160.1, Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1982.194, 50160.1Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua not known (Maker)WāhiTonga/PacificRāPre 1982Tikanga Waihangaplaited woven sewn knotted threadcontinuous threadlaceneedleworkWānot knownWaitohu/māka50160.1; TONGA; Fibre skirtPāohohibiscus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[hibiscus (fibre)]/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre/AAT Materialscowrie shell/seashell/shelldye/colorantRaraunga Ine750mm765mm870mm8mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Performing Arts/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūAccessory, DanceDance ArtefactsCeremonial ArtefactsCommunication ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua10 Dec 2020 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
