Manafau are skirts worn to perform in by both men and women and children, they are made from fau (hibiscus) fibre and there are different variations of manafau depending on the maker, the wearer, and the village they hail from. The most basic manafau are made from natural coloured fau but there are others with embellishments such as dyed fau, decorated waistbands etc. This manafau is made from varying shades of natural coloured fau with small sections of purple dyed fau in between. The fau strips are looped and knotted on a waist length piece of fau which is plaited and knotted at either end to create the ties. The fau strips are left to hang straight and loose.WāhiTonga/PacificAccession Number1982.194Rā Tāpiringa31 May 1982Tohu Tuakiri Kē50160.3 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete waist garment, 1982.194, 50160.3, Cultural Permissions… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1982.194, 50160.3Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua not known (Maker)WāhiTonga/PacificRāPre 1982Tikanga Waihangaplaited knotted threadcontinuous threadlaceneedleworkWānot knownWaitohu/mākaTonga; 50160.3; PresPāohohibiscus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreRaraunga Ine1070mm780mm760mm660mm8mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Performing Arts/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūAccessory, DanceDance ArtefactsCeremonial ArtefactsCommunication ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua10 Dec 2020 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
