  • Other Name

    Handle (English)

    Haft (English)

  • Description

Kakau toki. Adze haft. A long, four-sided ornately carved wooden haft with brittle tapeka puru akari (coconut sennit lashing) at its head. The puru akari, braided in a fine flat iri taki toru (3-ply braid) is in notably poor condition. The same geometric 'K-form' motif (unique to Mangaia) is repeated in rows all the way down the length of the haft. The puru akari is natural in colour. The haft is stained dark brown in colour.

Visible at the lower end of the haft is evidence of a previous breakage and an attempt to glue two piecesof the haft back together.
