Te reeree

human history
  • Other Name

    Sword (English)

  • Description

Te reeree. Sword. This is a weapon made from the following materials: wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth), nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres), kanni (coconut wood), ira (pandanus leaf) and nylon twine. A length of kanni has been cut and carved to portray a cylindrical handle and spatulate blade. The base of the handle shows a circular cross-section. A small width of the ira has been wrapped around where the handle and blade intersect.

A length of nimwaerere has been bound over the ira and an area alongside some nylon twining. A length of the nimwaerere hangs loosely from this binding. Small perforations have been drilled into the sides of the blade extending to the tapered point. A slit cavity has been made between each perforation where a single wii ni bakoa has been inlayed. Te nimwaerere has been used to thread through the perforations and fur ther secure the wii ni bakoa to the blade. A raised ridgeline extends down the centre of the blade on both sides. A coil of the nimwaerere features above the last set of wii ni bakoa just before the point of the blade. Some wii ni bakoa are missing and some loose strands of ira (hair) can be seen along the use of the nimwaerere.
