  • Description

    Placemat. Rectangular in shape. Woven from rauara (pandanus). Hatu commencement (the arrangement of the connected butt ends in a continuous row for the full width of the mat). Woven out in check. Paretumu mat (term used to describe fine mats with a decorative band around each border). Taviri finish around edges of mat (where cut-off wefts are twisted under surface of mat for concealment).

    The borders consist of diagonally positioned, alternating dyed-black and dyed-red overlaid strips of apuraka (giant swamp taro) akamanea (decoration). Punarua motif (pattern of repeated natural squares standing on corner) is placed in the centre of the decorative borders. Dyed-red apuraka forms a simple design of a triangle with its apex extending towards the centre of the mat.
