    kupesi (Tongan)

  • Description

    Kupesi. Patterned rubbing board. This kupesi has a base of kaka (coconut sheath) and is layered and cut to shape. The base is sewn together with pulu'i niu (coconut husk) and tu'aniu (coconut midrib) make up the shapes of the kupesi which are then sewn on to the base with pulu'i niu.

    This kupesi is made up of square and triangles, a row of squares which have two alternating designs in each square, then a row of triangles connected to the squares with straight lines inside as opposed to a design. [NEED NAMES/DESCRIPTION OF DESIGNS]. The design in each square alternates between the fata kupesi and the flower. The kupesi is dark and stained indicating that it has been frequently used.
