Kato pesi

human history
  • Other Name

    Purse (English)

  • Description

Kato pesi. Purse. This is a handwoven kato pesi. It has been woven from lau fā (pandanus leaf). It is square in shape and flat in form. The edge along the opening of the kato pesi has been finished in a serrated style rim. A single kavei (handle) has been attached to the central area of both sides of the kato pesi from inside. The kavei is plain woven and made up of orange dyed and naturally coloured lau fā.

It appears to have been stitched with white thread to the interior of the kato pese. The lalaga (weave) of the kato pesi shows a plain-woven format. The front and back both portray mata pelē. They are a central motif that portray a triangle, diamond and another triangle. These have been defined by bright pink dyed lau fā that has been applied externally. The remainder of the woven kato pesi portrays the naturally coloured pale yellow lau fā.
