waist garment

human history
  • Description

Manafau. Dancing skirt. Manafau are skirts worn to perform in by both men and women and children, they are made from fau (hibiscus) fibre and there are different variations of manafau depending on the maker, the wearer, and the village they hail from. The most basic manafau are made from natural coloured fau but there are others with embellishments such as dyed fau, decorated waistbands etc.

This manafau is made from strips of natural coloured as well as dyed multicoloured fau. These strips are looped and knotted onto a main piece of fau which is the waistband. There are two layers of the looped technique which makes for a thicker skirt of multiple layers. Directly under the loops, there is a thick waist band of brown and white pueki shells that are sewn on and create a zig-zag pattern of alternating colours. The fau strips from the loops as well as the thick waistband are left to hang loose.
