Kato

human history
  • Other Name

    Ladies' handbag

  • Description

This is a square shaped with a triangle lid, handwoven kato. Each strip measures 15mm x 15mm in of tofua (natural pandanus) and possibly kie (soft white pandanus) dyed green, used as an overlay and is mostly varnished. The lower pattern is woven as dextrals and sinistrals in a checkerboard pattern for 160mm and then each strip is split into roughly 3mm to create a new pattern - (similar to the Maori Papakirango pattern).

A button covered in black material is hand sewn in the centre front, third line from the pattern change. A piece of white string has been sewn through the tip of the lid, knotted and acts as the catch to close the lid. The handle is a single rolled four plait with natural and black, creating a tiamoni shaped pattern, black on one side and natural on the other. There are a couple of breakages in the tofua along the handle. Tofua is used to sew the inside and outside weaving together. One of the overlay strips on the lid near the fold, centre right has not been cut properly and is sticking out. There is also the bottom right corner where the green has come away from the tofua, as well as breakages in the same area. There are sunspots on some of the strips and the varnish has faded on the upper left side of the front and the back. There is also possible moisture damage in the upper left section as well as further breakages. A female kato possibly used for church or special occasion.
