    Basket

  • Description

    Kato. Basket. Small oval shaped coil basket. This kato is made with coiled tu'aniu (coconut midrib) which has been wrapped and knotted together with lou akau (pandanus). The tu'aniu is coiled from the bottom and its wrapped and knotted until the desired depth is reached. A black band of dyed lou akau decorates the basket face just underneath the rim.

    The kau (handle) are on either side of the kato and are plaited from black dyed and natural strips of lou akau, knotted and attached on either side of the kato.
