table mat

human history
  • Description

Tablemat. This is a place mat, double square star shaped, and woven from dark lou akau (pandanus) strips. Lighter coloured lou akau is used to inlay the words "OFA ATU", a flower, and also a sitting figure on to the front face of the mat. Table mats like this are often made for tourist trade and to sell at the local markets and roadsides by local village women in Tonga.
