Naturalistic sculptures of men and women were produced in the New Georgia and Vella Lavella areas in the later nineteenth century, probably made for sale to European traders and possibly representing particular persons. Many have the same sorts of ornaments worn by living people at that time, such as the shell money necklaces, extended earlobes with plugs, and Nautilus shell inlay matching the patterns of contemporary fashionable face painting.
