human history
  • Other Name

    Banner (English)

  • Description

Reva. Banner. Centre consists of a wooden frame. Holes are along the wooden frame for multiple strands of rito (young coconut leaf) to be threaded through and woven out, finishing with aka verevere (fringe) across the all sides of the wooden frame. Three parau, pupu rengarenga (small yellow shells), and possibly white pipi (clam) shells are woven into the banner, decorating the lower area.

Multiple iri taki toru (three ply braids) made of puru akari (sennit) are suspended across the centre of the banner, and are threaded through holes of the wooden frame. Tufts made of strands of rito are attached to the puru akari. Natural parau (mother of pearl shells) are threaded onto the tufts of rito. Strips of possibly rito midrib decorate the centre in a "V" shape. Along the top panel of the wooden frame are mata kiore (cats eye shells) shells arranged to form the letters "C I W F". Adhesive remnants are visible along the top panel of the wooden frame that possibly form the letters "M (before the letter 'C') and possibly an "A" (after the letter 'F'). "1972" is formed across the lower panel of the wooden frame, using mata kiore shells. Natural in colour.
