human history
  • Other Name

    Skirt (English)

  • Description

Titi. Skirt. This is a woven titi made of kaulama (dried coconut leaf). The kaulama has been cut into long narrow strips and tied to a waist band. The strips then hang loosely to provide the body of the titi. The strips are varying colours of brown and are quite fragile. At the end of the waist band is two hand ties made of braided kafā (sennit). At the opposite end of the waistband is a loop made of kafā also. This loop is used to tie the titi around the waist.

Titi were traditionally worn every day by women. Now titi are worn by both men and women for entertainment purposes.
