human history
  • Other Name

    Food gathering basket (English)

  • Description

Polapola. Food gathering basket. This polapola is a plaited coconut leaf basket, woven as a cone shape with a final spiral plait to close off the bottom. These polapola are very quick and easy to make and are usually made as a food carrier or fishing basket. The leaf has been split down the middle of the spine. The plait with this polapola is one forward, one back, and continues with one over, one under.

The midrib/spine is then folded to make the shape and to bring the two sides together, completing the cone shape. The plait itself has very large gaps in it. Its colour is faded green brown with a brown midrib. There are also a number of sunspots on the leaves as well as breakages in the midrib, and folded into the cone shape.
