human history
  • Other Name

    Fatu hi fapuku (Tokelauan)

    Stone hook for fapuku (English)

  • Description

Fatu hi fapuku. Stone hook for fapuku. Hook for sighting fapuku (marbled sea bass). This is a fatu hi fapuku made of kafa (sennit), a fatu puga (coral stone) and three iron hooks. The fatu puga is white in colour with a rough shape. The kafa is a light brown colour with a fibrous texture. The kafa has been created using a tupe lau tolu (three-ply braid) technique. The kafa is tightly wrapped around the fatu puga.

Several strands of kafa have been tied together to create the long afo (fishing line). At the end of three strands are three iron hooks. These hooks differ in size but all hooks are curved. The presence of three hooks is referred to as tau tolu. This name changes according to the number of hooks used. The hooks are a dark brown colour and pointed. Fatu hi fapuku were used to catch fapuku.
