  • Other Name

    Basket (English)

  • Description

Ato. Kato. Basket. Made by Elena Hulo. This ato can be used as a travel bag or storage bag or for whatever purpose the owner needs it for. This ato is made from laufala (pandanus leaf), launiu (coconut leaf), and kaulama (mature coconut leaf). The ato is double layered, with the inside layer being woven first and then the outside layer made last. The two layers are then sewn together with a gila (needle).

It is woven in a rectangular box shape with two handles, one on the back end and one at the front, looped and attached from the inside. The ato opens from the top, the lid opens up and there are two toggles below the front rim as well as two tie loops on the rim of the lid to secure the lid while it is closed.
