    Pump drill (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Vilivili. Pump drill. This vilivili is a hand-operated pump drilling tool consisting of several components. A long cylindrical wooden rod is the central shaft which pierces through a circular plate of wood fastened at its mid section. At the bottom of the shaft a metal nail is fastened with kafa (coconut sennit) which acts as the drill bit for this vilivili. At the very top of the central shaft, kafa of a light brown colour is tied and attached to a stick at both ends.

This stick is gripped in the hand, and when pumped up and down continuously, causes the metal drill bit to create holes in materials such as wood, stone or bone.
