Clam shell adze. Adzes are used for carving wood into many useful objects, including vaka (canoes), construction of fale (houses), and for smaller domestic objects. This toki is worked from kauagati (tridacna shell). In the atolls of Tokelau where sourcing volcanic stone is not possible, toki made from kauagati, or giant clam shells, are the favoured option. According to the label, this toki was made by Panapa. Pale yellow in colour on one side and grey on the outer side, the toki kauagati is long in shape with minimal reduction towards the poll. It is bent into a scoop in profile, and almost half-cylindrical in shape due to the natural grooves of the shell. The cutting edge is sharp with a smooth sloping bevel. The outward facing surface of the toki kauagati is wavy with raised surface texture, while its underside is smooth and matte.WāhiFakaofo/Tokelau Islands/Polynesia/PacificAccession Number1970.208Rā Tāpiringa1970Tohu Tuakiri Kē43954 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Toki kauagati, 1970.208, 43954, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1970.208, 43954Takenga ā-AhureaTokelauanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiFakaofo/Tokelau Islands/Polynesia/PacificRāPre 1970Tikanga Waihangapolished CutWaitohu/māka43954 FAKAOFO IS TOKELAU IS.
