  • Description

    ‘Umeke Lā‘au. Wooden bowl. This ‘umeke lā‘au has been carved from lā‘au (wood) into a flat-bottomed bowl, cylindrical and balanced in general shape. The diameter of the ‘umeke is greater than its depth with its sides smooth and rounded with a glazed exterior. The lā‘au is thought to be mango as it is a light brown colour. Circular rings featured along the sides suggest it could have been carved from a tree crotch.

    It is possible this specimen was manufactured through a modern wood-turning method. A crack is visible on the rim running down to the base.
