Kafa

human history
  • Other Name

    Sennit (English)

  • Description

Kafa. Sennit. This is a bundle of kafa made of pulu (coconut husk). The kafa is a light brown colour with a fibrous texture. The pulu has been mili (rubbed) along the maker's thigh to form a strand. These strands have then been braided using a fili laufā (four ply braid) technique. One end of the kafa is simply knotted to prevent the fili laufā from unravelling. The other end is braided into a loop using a thinner fili laulua (two ply braid) technique.

This kafa is in a bundle and tied around itself to keep it together. Kafa were used for various purposes such as lashing tools, implements and vaka (canoes).
