human history
  • Other Name

    Cord (English)

  • Description

Te kora. Cord. Two items. Men use kora for outdoor purposes such as building and fishing while women use it for purposes such as clothing and baskets. It is made of coconut fibre and pandanus leaves and its entire framework can be identified as having three layers. The inner component is formed by amassing many strands of coconut fibre. This is wrapped in another layer of pandanus leaves.

The third and outer layer or surface consists of thin pandanus leaves of natural brown and dark colour. The contrasting coloured strips are neatly woven, creating decorative patterns whilst enveloping the body of te kora. The ends are loose and its entirety is coiled.
