    bone carving: handcarved & illustrated by German POW (probably off SMS Blucher) while in POW camp in the Scottish Borders, not far from the town of Hawick, during WW1.

    The German battlecruiser SMS Blucher was sunk by the British during the battle of Dogger Bank on 24.1.1915. Germans rescued by the British from this vessel and others were transferred to Stobs POW camp in the Scottish Highlands (which had been established as a POW Camp c. October 1914). By 1916 there were approximately 5,000 German POWs at Stobs. They had various facilities including a library, and also published a newsletter 'STOBSIADE' ["News from Stobs"]
