Label on plinth: "This plaster statuette is the original model of the bronze statue erected on the monument at the summit of One Tree hill.
Designed by Mr R Atkinson Abbott and modelled by Mr RO Gross, the model was shipped to Singer of Britain for casting the bronze. This was returned in a rough state. Final polishing was done by Mr Ran by.
The model, lost for over 40 years was discovered in 1983 by Mrs EE Ranby who presented ti to the One Tree Hill Domain Board.
The figure represents a Maori chief gazing northwards over the lands of the people descended from the Tainui canoe."
