    Tapa beater (English)

  • Description

    Ike. Beater, tapa cloth. Used for pounding and producing sheets of tapa (bark cloth). Carved from a solid piece of rakau (wood), long and rectangular in shape, with a square cross-section, tapering at the handle. The top ends of the sides of the beater are slightly concave in shape.

    There are four grooved sides, with two of the sides consisting of fine grooves that are carved approximately 1mm apart, with another side also consisting of fine grooves that are carved approximately .5mm apart, and the fourth side consisting of widely spaced grooves, that are carved approximately 7-10mm apart. Brown in colour.

    'Tapa beaters in the Cook Islands were made from toa wood according to the usual eastern Polynesian long narrow form, with four parallel sides and a wide range of grooving - from very fine to very wide.' Neich and Pendergrast, 'Pacific Tapa', 1997.
