‘Umeke lā‘au

human history
  • Other Name

    Wooden bowl (English)

  • Description

‘Umeke lā‘au. Wooden bowl. This ‘umeke lā‘au has been carved from lā‘au (hardwood), possibly Kou (Cordia subcordata), into a flat-bottomed bowl, cylindrical in shape. It has polished surface treatment on the exterior and matte surface treatment on the interior. Circular rings featured on sides of the bowl suggest it could have been carved from a tree crotch. It is medium brown in colour with varying hues going from light to darker brown.

Cracks in the wood are visible along the rim. There are two areas where pāhonohono (repair work) has been applied using the kiki (styled wedge); one is of a square shape and the other is trapezoidal. These kiki holds the cracks closed and is a sign of advanced craftsmanship.
