  • Description

    Pōvai moungalaulau. Paddle club. This club is carved from one block of toa (ironwood) smooth and polished and dark rich brown in colour. The handle is cylindrical in shape and flattens and tapers out to a paddle shaped blade which is curved at the end and thin in depth. The entire club is elaborately carved with geometric patterns and lines which have been repeated throughout.

    pōvai moungalaulau like this one were used by men and warriors in times of combat and warfare and would have been used to strike and hit opponents who were in close proximity.
