    Fish hook (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Fish hook. This is a fish hook made from 3 components: a short rod made of light coloured wood, cordage of fibrous material, a hook and barb also made of a light coloured wood. The rod is cylindrical in form and features a length of cordage made from a natural fibre. A strand of the cordage has been coiled around one end of the rod then lined down towards the opposite and tied across the central area.

It has then been tied at the opposite end and extends out to which it has been finished as a coil at the shank end of the hook. The hook has been made from a light coloured wood. It appears to have been obtained from a specific part of the branch as defined by the natural direction of the wood and the way it has been repurposed to portray the bend of the hook. A separate coil of the same fibrous material used to produce the other cordage length has been used to bind off the end of the hook which may have at one time featured a barb attachment.
