Ili

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Ili. Fan. This is a handheld ili, made up of lau niu (coconut leaf) and 'afa (coconut husk fibre sennit). It is pentagon-like in shape and predominantly flat with a bulbous centre. The 'au (handle) is round, thick and cylindrical in form with a bulbous base. It is of a hack of lau niu bound and encased in thick dark brown 'afa. The 'au is fili (plaited) lau niu at the upper section in an excessively protruding manner.

The lau (leaf/blade) is formed by the lalaga (weaving) of lau niu until the pentagon-like shape is actualised. The colour of the lau is mostly light brown with black lau niu strips arranged and interwoven in sections for decorations. An unusual feature of this ili is found in the exceedingly bulbous form of the plaited section of the 'au.
