Manafau are skirts worn to perform in by both men and women and children, they are made from fau (hibiscus) fibre and there are different variations of manafau depending on the maker, the wearer, and the village they hail from. The most basic manafau are made from natural coloured fau but there are others with embellishments such as dyed fau, decorated waistbands etc. This manafau is made from natural colour fau, strips are loops onto a longer length of fau and under this loop is a waistband of pueki shells. There is a row of medium brown puaki along the top and bottom of the waistband, the middle section features alternating columns of dark brown and white pueki shells and openwork sia technique. The strips of fau have been divided and are plaited, this helps to keep the strips together and ensure there are not knots.WāhiTonga/PacificAccession Number1969.94Rā Tāpiringa24 Apr 1969Tohu Tuakiri Kē41318 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete waist garment, 1969.94, 41318, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1969.94, 41318Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua not known (Maker)WāhiTonga/PacificRāPre 1969Tikanga Waihangaplaited woven sewn shell workWāunknownWaitohu/māka41318 Niuatoputapu (?)
